So you are interested in trying out some RC hobbies. Whether it is to race at a local track or play around with in your own home, purchasing a radio controlled plane or automobile can be quite an overwhelming experience for a new hobbyist.
Many who start out will purchase an inexpensive toy-grade device. However, doing so can actually end up costing a lot more money than purchasing a hobby-grade device. Below are a few things you should think about before making a purchase to insure that you are happy with your choice.
1) Features – As a new RC hobbyist, you will likely be looking for a device that is fun to use, has good speed and durability, all while being easy to use. There are a wide range of features you can look into, but as a new user you should focus on durability, toughness and how easily it can be repaired and run.
2) Scale – This refers to how large your device is. While there are many different scales to choose from, you will likely find the best value at 1/10th scale. That can be fairly large for a car or other device, so if you are limited on space you can opt for something a bit smaller at either 1/16th or 1/18th scale.
3) Types – There are two major types when it comes to RC cars and trucks, electric and nitro. As a beginner, I would recommend going with an electric vehicle. They are generally easier to use, safer and also tend to be quieter than their nitro counterparts. Although nitro RC vehicles are generally faster, quality electric RC devices are also pretty fast so you should have a good time with them.
4) Parts – One thing you will need for sure are extra parts to maintain and repair your RC vehicle. Online prices tend to be lower, but be sure to buy from a trusted site. If you can find a comparable price at a local store, I would recommend supporting your local store and buying from them instead. Just be sure to go with brands you trust.
There are plenty of other factors that can come into play when deciding on a RC hobby vehicle. The tips provided above should point you in the right direction and you will be enjoying your new hobby in no time!
